Benefits of Music
Over the past few weeks, as we’ve set up our Building Brains tent across Lethbridge, we’ve had the chance to sing and dance with hundreds of children. Music is an important activity for young children; a simple song or dance can have far-reaching effects. Here are a few of the valuable benefits of music for children:
1. Brain growth—musical activities (like singing or listening to music) stimulate the brain, leading to the development of new neural connections.
2. Language skills—children who participate in music classes experience accelerated speech development, and learn to read more easily. Music contributes to the development of the left side of the brain, which is related to language.
3. Memory, attention, and concentration—learning music requires concentration and attention, and studies show that people who are musically trained have better working memory skills (an important component of executive function).
4. Increased coordination—dancing and moving to music helps children to develop their motor skills. There are many action songs that require fine and gross motor movements.
5. The joy of music—music provides an outlet for children to express themselves, unleash their creativity, and relieve stress.
In light of these benefits, we encourage you to incorporate music into your daily routine with your children. Listen to music together, sing songs, make your own instruments, and find local music programs. One of our summer students has written a neat song about the benefits of play for children’s brains. Listen to it here.
